Dear Uncle Anding, Our beloved Uncle Ramon told me all about you and gave me a copy of the geneaology book you composed. I am in it with my family. We live in Pennsylvania. I wish I could have met when I was in the Philippines and Australia. My dad George Roces Sotelo was born in Panay and lived his early life in Manila but moved to New York after the war. He was very close to Ramon and Benito Roces. I visited my Dad's sister Maria Paz and her husband Henry Brimo in 1989 in Quezon City to help my sister adopt a filipino boy and visited Uncle Ramon at that time. It was a memory I will always cherish- he was truly great. If you are ever in the U.S. I would enjoy meeting you. Your work is beyond superlatives-I loved reading the book on Liling. It brought tears to my eyes. Maria

PUBLICADO EN LANZAROTE Send to a friend View Thread: Return to Topic Index surfing in famara by CARLOS ROCES FELGUEROSO on 10/5/2004 5:26:34 PM César and Eduardo Manrique by carlos roces on 10/5/2004 5:32:18 PM - You are HERE! The following message (subject: César and Eduardo Manrique) was posted by carlos roces, on 10/5/2004 5:32:18 PM.César and Eduardo ManriqueLANZAROTE, hace cuarenta años, era desconocida. Carlos Roces Felgueroso, Gijón Post a Reply: Name: E-mail: Subject: Comments:

Dear Alfredo (Ding)-I just found a copy of your "Culture Shock" volume and was delighted (and astonished) to see you had quoted from my 1966 article. I recently "retired" from running international programs at UC Berkeley, but am now busier than ever with various projects in Africa, India, and at my old PhD dissertation field site, Estancia, Iloilo. Am still living in Berkeley, but we also have a small condo in Durban, South Africa, so please do let me know if you might be coming in either direction in the foreseeable future. There is much to talk about and I would love to see you again.Warm regards,Yours,David

How I wish and pray you and your family are still in its prime of good health, as we do here in the "Windy City of Chicago". I have viewed your great, motivating and inspiring works of art, hoping that you still continue your unending intimacy of visualization towards the beauty of its nature in Australia. Wishing you the best of everything in your life as a MASTER. Ding I salute you. I do hope you won't forget me your huble friend in the U.S.A. Before, I will signed up, I would like to inform you about myself too. I just finished a semi-life size portrait of a Great and Famous Man during the 1930's. He is Gen. Paulino Torres Santos, who was once the Chief of Staff during the time of Philippine President Manuel Luis Quezon. The painting will be installed in the museum named after him, General Paulino Santos Museum which is located in the campus of the Notre Dame of Dadiangas College, through the Coordination of the President of the college, Rev. Bro. Wilfredo E. Lubrico, FMS. of General Paulino Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines. There will be a big celebration of Unveiling the said portrait of the General this coming March 7, 2003. The guests are: Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio, Mayor Pedro Acharon, Jr. Atty. Hello Ding, How are you and your family? How is your wife, I missed to visit your Website in five years now. Hope you are all doing alright, especially in our professions. Sometimes I am getting some messages in Canada and most of the time I am getting some e-mails from our friend Romi Mananquil. He is the President of thier Group of Artists in Canada. He's doing alright, I guess. Well, for quite sometimes I have some link of my publicities here in Chicago and here it is: http://www.philtime-usa.com/archive/092001/silva.html and http://www.philtime-usa.com/bueno.html You can only click this through e-mail. Here, I have not gone home to Manila yet and I am hoping by next year 2004 I will try to be there. Yeah, before I forget, I have just finished a portrait of a Famous Man. He is General Paulino Santos. I have done this in oil on Canvas a semi-life size. My only reference was taken from an old Philippine Free Press, April 1936, he was then the Chief of Staff during the time of President Manuel L. Quezon. There will be a big celebration in his honor, the unveiling of the said portrait in his named General Paulino Santos Museum through the Notre Dame of Dadiangas College and it will be under the Coordination of Bro. Wilfredo Lubrico, FMS and the President of NDDC. The occasion will takes place on February 27, 2003 Foundation Day of General Santos City of South Cotabato, Philippines. It will be attended by the Family of the Late General, Officials of the Government, Relatives, Friends and Guests. I do hope I can attend but I guest my spirit and love to the whole Guests is with them all. I will be missing this such a great occasion especially it is my work of love as an artist. Thank you Ding and Family. How I wish, we will be seeing each other someday. More power to you and may God be with you always.... Dear Mr. Roces: Being born in the Philippines and then moving to the US at a very young age, your book, "Culture Shock! Philippines" brought back some fond memories of my childhood, helped me to understand my parents, and gave me a sense of belonging to my roots. I am currently working on a huge endeavor; my family's genealogy. I am hoping to someday publish a small book with the family tree and some of their interesting stories. I admire your writing style; your book makes for interesting reading. Thank you and I look forward to reading your other works. Grace.

Hello Mr. Roces, I am a Producer with National Geographic Television & Film. I was recently filming a documentary in manila about local taboos. The film showcases the many spirits that Filipinos talk about: the kapre, aswang, dwende, fairy, etc. I saw your book, Filipino Heritage: The Making of a Nation, and I'd love to get your permission to use some of the photos/illustrations in the film. I've already been in contact with your brother, Alfredo regarding his door carvings. Won't you please email me at mcarlos@ngs.org so we can discuss? Many thanks, Melanie Carlos

Ding!I'm not sure if you will remember who I am, but in the mid-70's you started me on my road to being a professional artist's model! It may help you to recall by letting you know that I'm an American who was married to a US Military man, and also was involved in martial arts, did movies and tv there, as well as around the music scene. My favorite hangout was "The Last Unicorn". I have continued to model and became the highest paid in CA and FL and worked up til last year. I also dug deeper into my own art and have grown to love pastels. Through all the trials and tribulations that life has thrown my way, being an artist's model has been my most rewarding. It may not have been the most profitable (can't give them too much or they will tire of you), but the experiences have made it well worth it. I thank the Lord that your model didn't show up that fateful day and I thank you for giving me the chance.

Sir, I am a student of St.Benedict College in Alabang. I was assigned by my Philippine LIterature's teacher to make a biography about you. At first, i have no idea who you are since i wasn't fond of reading Filipino books and appreciating Filipino arts but when i found out about your site like at this very day, i realized that you are a great artist and we, the Filipinos, should be very proud of you. My teacher, Ms. Quijano, gave me a little background about you. she said that the Roceses come from a well known family. that you used to own the Manila Times Publication Co. Sir, i don't want to interview you personally since i know that you are a very busy person but i would appreciate if you would reply and answered some of this questions: As a Filipino artist, how do approach your works, historically or socially? ; As a Filipino, how do you cope up with international standards?;What are your plans for your works now that we are in the new millennium?; what are your advices for today's youth who wnat to be like you? Thank you sir, and i will wait for your respond.

Ding, I accessed your website and I can see you have been verybusy, and Mina and Grace are authors too. I see that amazon.com is selling your books. I wonder if Linda Nietes is selling them too. Remember Linda who used to sell those artbooks at the Taza de Oro with her then husband, I forget his name.Anyway she's now married to an American, and she lives in a really expensive area here in L.A. She's got a book mail order business now, although for a few years she had a store in Beverly Hills and she specializes in Filipino books. Just another reminder of our Saturday Group days. Anyway, I have been doingsome digital designs on the computer too, but on the abstractside. Wow!! I am just now discovering the wonders of the internet. I can keep in touch with you and the Australian Filipino art scene, the Manila art scene (Eric has a weekly column at Philippine Star which can be access easily by searching for Philippine Star) and elsewhere around the world.I found Angelito David's website and he is now in New Jersey teaching Art restoration. You remember him as one of the Italinian scholars with Pacunayen, et al. Anyway, keep in touch. Rudy
